Name:
E. coli (biotype 1)
Under the scope:
Gram negative straight rods
On the plate:
L-EMB: blue-black or brown colonies with or without metallic sheen
MacConkey Agar: typical colonies are brick red while atypical colonies are colorless or slightly pink
In the incubator:
Optimal growth at 37° C. Fecal strains will grow up to 45° C.
Illnesses caused:
Strains that contain enterotoxin or other virulence factors cause diarrheal disease. Also causes urinary tract infections, septicemia and meningitis.
Challenges of testing:
Some strains of E. coli exhibit atypical reactions (i.e., lactose negative, anaerogenic, etc).
It is important to consider the overall biochemical profile rather than one specific reaction.
