Name:
Listeria

Under the scope:
Gram positive, non-spore forming, short straight rods usually motile

On the plate:
MOX, Oxford Agar and PALCAM: typical colonies have black precipitate (black haloes)

In the incubator:
Optimal growth at 30-37° C. Motility inhibited at 37° C.

Illnesses caused:
Meningitis, septicemia and spontaneous abortion

In the kitchen:
Outbreaks have been associated with: turkey, frankfurters, alfalfa tablets, meat products, ready to eat prepared meats, fermented sausage, poultry, coleslaw, milk, and Mexican-style cheese.

Challenges of testing:
Listeria grows slowly, rate is about half that of other pathogens. A test must have an enrichment protocol that promotes growth of Listeria while suppressing the growth of competitive organisms.
